Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
